The police on Friday arrested a man and his driver under the Child Labour Prohibition Act 1986 in connection with alleged suicide of a minor girl in his house in Dehradun’s Race Course area. The CCTV footage and other evidence showed that they harassed the girl which possibly pushed her to commit suicide, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said.

A teenage girl on Thursday morning allegedly hanged herself in the house where she worked as a full time house help. Her parents claimed that she was killed by the owners but according to the SSP, the post mortem report showed suicidal hanging to be the cause of death. Further, there was nothing in the report that indicated that the victim was going through any kind of physical abuse or sexual assault. He said that CCTV footage showed the girl going into the bathroom with a stool to hang herself and after sometime, others went there and brought her body outside and tried to give her medical help. Then they took her to the hospital where she was declared as brought dead.

The parents filed a case against the girl’s employers on Thursday under section 302, 323, 354 and 342 Indian Penal Code and 7/ 8 POCSO Act and 3(a)/ 4 Child Labour Prohibition Act 1986. The police started the investigation and on the basis of CCTV footage and other evidence, they arrested the home owner Abhishek Luthra and his driver Rajiv Kumar. “The CCTV footage and other evidence showed that Luthra and Kumar used to allegedly harass her for work. Considering this, the police arrested them under sections 305/ 323/ 342/ 120 B and 3/14 Child Labour Prohibition Act 1986. The investigation is ongoing,” the SSP added.
