Five women arrested in Haldwani riot case

The police on Friday arrested five women accused in connection with the Haldwani riot. The police have so far arrested 89 accused for their alleged connection with the violence. The Nainital senior superintendent of police Prahlad Narayan Meena said during a Press conference in Haldwani on Friday that the five accused have been identified as Salma (50), Shahnaz (45), Reshma (45), Soni (39) and Shamsheer (25). 

The police arrested these women after identifying them with the help of CCTV footage and evidence gathered during the investigation. He said that the police are consistently working to arrest all culprits involved in the Vanbhulpura violence in Haldwani that killed at least seven people, injured over 100 persons and led to property damage worth over Rs two crores. The violence occurred on February 8 when authorities demolished a madarsa and a namaz  site allegedly built illegally on the government’s land. The SSP said that the police have so far seized several weapons, cartridges and shells from 84 accused who were involved in the riot.

The alleged mastermind of the riot Abdul Malik is currently under police custody remand (PCR) till March 6. The police have received crucial information regarding the case from Malik and his recently arrested son Abdul Moed. The police are proceeding in the case accordingly, he added.
