Hooch case accused arrested a day after Panchayat poll win

A day after she was elected the Gram Pradhan by a margin of one vote, one of the accused in the Pathri hooch incident which resulted in the death of 12 persons, Babli Devi was arrested by Haridwar police on Thursday. The police will be presenting her in the court.

It will be recalled that on September 9, the hooch incident in Pathri police station area came to light in which a total of 12 persons died in Phulgarh village and neighbouring areas. While

Babli’s husband Bijendra is the main accused in the case for supplying the spurious liquor which resulted in the deaths, she along with his brother Naresh were also accused in the case. Bijendra had been arrested earlier by the police while Babli was arrested on Thursday whereas Naresh is still absconding.  

Patrhi police station officeri Pawan Dimri said that Babli Devi had been arrested and would be produced in the court while efforts are underway to nab absconder Naresh. Earlier, during the counting of votes Babli won over her rival candidate Swati. Babli got 855 votes while Swati got 848 votes but Swati appealed for re-counting. When the administration got the recounting done Babli got 859 votes while her rival Swati got 858 votes making the accused the winner by a margin of one vote.
