In wake of the recent murder of a 19-year-old female Ankita Bhandari who worked as a receptionist at Vanantara resort in Pauri district, the Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) is planning to prepare a proposal to send it to the State government to ensure the safety of women in workplaces.

The member secretary of the commission Kamini Gupta told The Pioneer that USCW has interacted with officials concerned of various departments regarding the safety of women working in various sectors and industries across the State. She said that the commission will hold a meeting with district and State level officials concerned in October to discuss the women safety issue and what can be done to address it. The commission has already interacted with the Tourism department regarding the safety and wellbeing of the women working in the tourism industry and has asked them to conduct verification of each person working in hotels, restaurants and homestays among others, said Gupta.

She further stated that the commission will  include the issue of safety of women in education institutions and hostels in the proposal too as the commission has observed safety irregularities in several of such places in some districts. “Suggestions and recommendations of the officials and experts concerned given in the meeting will be analysed and subsequently added to the proposal. The commission will send the proposal to the State government to consider it to issue guidelines for women’s safety in workplaces in Uttarakhand as soon as possible,” said Gupta. The women commission has also formed a special committee which will keep the commission apprised of the investigation in the Ankita Bhandari murder case and assist in analysing the progress of the case.
