The Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) received 1,947 cases of crimes against women across the State during 2022-2023, said the chairperson of USCW Kusum Kandwal. She said this in a Press conference held here on Saturday.

Addressing the media, Kandwal expressed her satisfaction at having completed her two-year tenure as the chairperson of USCW. Dwelling on her work during the said period, Kandwal said that every year, the State organises awareness programmes to educate women about their rights and safety. The commission makes every effort to ensure that women do not face any kind of problem. Additionally, in case of any mishappening against women in the State, she, as the chairperson of USCW, ensures that strict action is taken against it promptly, she added.

She further shared that until 2023, the USCW had registered 1,947 cases of crimes against women, including domestic violence and others. Out of these, 89 cases have been solved by USCW in the interests of the women. She further stressed that the commission has witnessed many cases where women are harassed in the office. In view of this, she directed every department to form an internal complaints committee to hear the voice of women. Further, the commission ensures that awareness programmes are held with the anti-human trafficking team, which also includes topics related to drugs. The said programme has become essential for the State as directed by chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to free Uttarakhand of drugs by 2025, she added.

“Approval of the State’s women policy by the State government on the request of the commission is another commendable decision by the State government which will surely benefit the women politically, economically and socially,” the USCW chief said.
