Considering the rising number of pilgrims reaching the Char Dham shrines, the Uttarakhand police are considering adopting slot and token systems to prevent long queues for Darshan and ensure crowd management inside temples.

This was discussed in the review meeting of traffic management during Char Dham Yatra held by the officiating director general of police Abhinav Kumar on Wednesday with the senior police officials. He asked the officials concerned to consider these recommendations considering the limited capacity of Char Dham temples. He also instructed the senior/superintendent of police of Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Rudraprayag to assess the carrying capacity of temples to ensure how many devotees can have Darshan in specific time duration besides assessing the vehicle capacity of parking lots and the carrying capacity of devotees on Char Dham routes.

The data will help the police to make an action plan, as per the DGP. He also directed the officials to identify new holding areas to mitigate traffic jams on Char Dham routes. These should be located near main towns where the pilgrims and travellers can get basic facilities easily like food, accommodation and other essential commodities. The police should also fix the duration of halting pilgrims in the holding areas and inform them about it in advance. He said that the traffic plan should be publicised as much as possible to prevent pilgrims from any inconvenience. Besides this, the police will also fix the timing of the movement of mules operating in Kedarnath and Yamunotri, he added.
