Doon police penalise 64 people for smoking in public & selling tobacco products near schools

The Dehradun police on Friday penalised 64 people in Raipur block for smoking in public and selling banned tobacco products near schools and colleges. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Daleep Singh Kunwar recently ordered all police stations in-charges to run a campaign against those selling tobacco products near educational institutions and smoking in public places.

Following the orders, a checking campaign was conducted in various places of Raipur block including Balawala, Mayur Vihar, Maldevta and Raipur area by three teams consisting of 12 police personnel, informed the officials. The police teams penalised 64 people in Raipur block under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) for smoking in public areas and running shops to sell tobacco products like cigarettes, bidis and chewable tobacco among others tobacco products.

The officials said that as per COTPA, it is prohibited to sell tobacco products in and around schools and to minors. On Friday, the police collected a total of Rs 3,200 as a penalty from 64 people violating rules. The SSP said that the police will continue to conduct this campaign across the district and take action against offenders under COTPA.
