The taxi-travellers association in Nainital has stated that it will not provide vehicles for election duty in the ensuing Assembly elections. The Tallital taxi owners committee head Pankaj Tiwari said that two-year old dues of the taxi union have not been paid yet. The Transport department and district administration should first clear the pending dues. Only then will the association provide its vehicles for election duty, he said. Tiwari said that the Transport department had acquired many vehicles for governor and VIP duties during the past two years. The department is also taking the union’s vehicles for Covid duty from time to time. However, the payment for these has not been made so far, he averred. Tiwari said that the dues amount to lakhs of rupees. He warned that if the authorities acquire their vehicles for election duty without clearing the earlier dues, the taxi unions and operators of Kathgodam, Haldwani, Bhawali, Tallital and Sukhatal will jointly protest against such a move. Vehicles will not be provided for election duty unless the dues are cleared, he stressed.
