Six dead, four injured in kiln wall collapse, DM orders probe

Six labourers died and four others got injured when a brick kiln wall collapsed on them in Haridwar district’s Lahboli village in Roorkee on Tuesday morning. The labourers were working at the kiln when it collapsed on them, the Haridwar senior superintendent of police Pramendra Dobhal said. The Haridwar district magistrate Dhiraaj Singh Garbyal has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident. The incident happened around 7 AM on Tuesday. Labourers at the brick kiln were busy making bricks when the wall fell on them and some cattle. The authorities concerned along with the district disaster management team reached the spot and started relief and rescue operations on receiving the information. The workers trapped under the debris were pulled out with the help of machinery. It took considerable time for the authorities to pull out the victims from beneath the debris. Dobhal said that five labourers died on the spot while the remaining five were taken to a hospital in Roorkee. Another labourer succumbed to injuries in the hospital during treatment, the SSP said. Besides this, a horse was also killed after getting buried under the rubble of the wall. The SSP, DM and other senior officials also reached the spot when authorities were carrying out the work to remove the injured labourers buried under the debris. Dobhal said that the police analysed the space where the accident occurred and will investigate accordingly. He said, “We are looking into the circumstances that led to the accident. The police will investigate the matter and take strict legal action against the guilty party.” The DM has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter which will be conducted by the joint magistrate of Roorkee. He said that three of the labourers belonged to Lahboli village, one was from Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar and the remaining belong to nearby villages. The SSP said that the police had informed the families of all victims. The bodies of the deceased will be handed over to families after the completion of legal procedure, he added.
