Three dead, one injured after car with tourists falls into gorge

Accident occurred on Friday night, passerby informed police after spotting a victim on Saturday morning

Three persons died and one was injured when the car they were travelling in fell down the mountainside near Chapun in Kalsi area of Dehradun late on Friday night. According to information provided by the police, information was received in the control room about a car falling down a gorge about 200 metres deep near Chapun about 14 kilometres from Kalisi at 6:45 AM on Saturday. The Kalsi police station and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel reached the accident site for rescue efforts.

It was ascertained that a car number UP14 CA 3336 was being driven towards Chakrata with four persons on board. Following the mishap, three persons died on the spot while one person was injured. The injured persons informed the police that all of them had come from Ghaziabad to Chakrata on a recreational trip. The injured person informed that at about 11:30 PM on Friday, the driver had lost control over the vehicle due to which it fell off the road and down the mountainside. The injured person was thrown out of the vehicle when it was falling into the gorge. He was spotted by the driver of a pickup vehicle early on Saturday morning who also informed the police.

The police admitted the injured person to the hospital in Vikasnagar while the bodies were recovered from the gorge. The family members of the victims have been informed about the mishap. The injured person has been identified as Gyanendra Saini (48) while the deceased have been identified as Rishabh Jain (27), Suraj Kashyap (27)- both residents of Ghaziabad and Lavleen Verma (40), a resident of Delhi.
