Sharma chosen for Asia’s Social Innovator Award

The secretary of Society of Pollution and Environmental Conservation Scientists (SPECS) Brijmohan Sharma has bagged Asia’s Social Innovator Award 2020-21.

He is the first person from Uttarakhand to get this award for which he was chosen taking into consideration the fact that he has touched over 50 lakh lives through his interventions across the remotest parts of the country. The long citation that will be presented to Sharma during the award presentation ceremony to be held later refers to his journey of the water testing campaign starting from the year 1990. It also mentions his food adulteration testing that started in 1996 to create awareness as well as to stop food adulteration. Sharma also has a passion for popularising science through field -based interventions among the various sections of society including children.

Significantly, as part of his commitment towards environment conservation in the year 2020-21, under his leadership, villagers of Doiwala block in Dehradun planted 2.10 lakh fruit trees in their fields. Even during Covid-19 lockdown, employment was generated for 68 marginalised women who stitched 62,000 face masks which were distributed to Covid warriors. In addition, 325 PPE kits, 5,000 reusable and 4,600 single use masks along-with a cheque for Rs one lakh was donated to CM of Uttarakhand.
