Taking cognisance and hearing the matter of traffic congestion hampering civic life during tourist season in Nainital as a PIL, the Uttarakhand High Court has issued a string of directions to the State administration.

The division bench headed by chief justice Vipin Sanghi directed that tourist vehicle parking should be made in Kaladhungi and Kathgodam, and good vehicles should be used to transport tourists to and from Nainital. On the direction to start helicopter service, the court was informed that the process of building helipads has started in Naukuchiatal and Dadimi. The HC pulled up the police for students, office goers and lawyers getting delayed along with senior citizens and patients facing problems due to traffic jam. The police was directed to strictly enforce no-parking zone and consistently patrol the town. Passes should be issued for school vehicles and other private vehicles ferrying students.

In another important direction, the court ordered that cycle rickshaws should be replaced by electric rickshaws on the Mall Road within two weeks. The court acknowledged that the cycle rickshaws also hamper traffic on this road. The court directed the municipality to immediately replace the cycle rickshaws with e-rickshaws and submit a report on it in the court within two weeks.
