Two men died of asphyxia in their sleep and one died during treatment due to noxious fumes from smouldering coal in their closed room in the wee hours of Tuesday in Nainital.

The officials informed that the men were labourers who were living near the High Court in Nainital. They reportedly lit an Angethi using coals on Sunday night to keep their room warm and went to sleep. The coal in the Angethi reportedly continued to burn till late Monday night and since there was no way out for the noxious fumes, it accumulated in the closed room due to which, the three men started suffocating. The officials said that the victims’ families were repeatedly trying to call them since Monday morning and when they did not respond, they called their contractor.

The contractor reached their room late on Monday to check on them and found them unconscious. They were taken to hospital for treatment where doctors declared two men Rajkumar (25) and Avneesh (21) as brought dead and Maninder (21) was referred to a higher centre in Haldwani where he died on Tuesday morning during treatment, as per the officials. The police reached the hospital and took the bodies to carry out further proceedings, the officials added.
