After the end of polling for the Lok Sabha elections, the political parties in Uttarakhand have started gearing up for the elections of urban local bodies (ULB).  The election for 93 ULB in the State is expected to be held in July. In view of these elections, both the BJP and Congress have started preparing their strategies. The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara has already met the senior leaders of Dehradun for the election of the important Municipal Corporation of Dehradun. The party leadership of Congress is in touch with local leaders on the ULB elections. The BJP on the other hand is also prepared for these elections. The State media-in- charge of BJP, Manvir Chauhan recently said that the party is waiting for the State Election Commission (SEC) to announce the dates of the elections. He said that the party is ready for the ULB elections.

It is pertinent to mention here that the tenure of the ULBs of the state ended in December last year. In view of the Lok Sabha elections and pending court cases, the government decided to appoint administrators in the ULBs. The six month period of the administrators is also ending on June 1.  The next hearing on the pending case in High Court (HC) is scheduled in the first week of May and in this the State government will inform the court about the status of its preparation for the ULB elections. As part of the preparations the Urban development department is planning to make necessary amendments in the act for OBC reservations in ULBs. The SEC has also made necessary preparations for the ULB elections and has prepared the voter lists for these elections.

There are nine Municipal Corporations (Dehradun, Haridwar, Haldwani, Rudrapur, Rishikesh, Kotdwar, Roorkee, Kashipur and Srinagar) in Uttarakhand.  The State also has 41 Municipal Councils and 45 Nagar Panchayats.
