The Doon Valley Mahanagar Udyog Vyapar Mandal (DVMUVM) is slated to discuss the maintenance of safety measures at the city’s major markets with the district magistrate on Sunday. This information was shared by DVMUVM president Pankaj Masson in response to a recent incident of arson at Omji Garments shop in Patlan Bazaar. Regarding this, many shopkeepers have expressed concerns and called for enhanced safety measures in market areas, including the installation of CCTVs.

Reflecting on this, cloth shop owner Rajeev Narula highlighted the sense of fear among shopkeepers in Paltan Bazaar and nearby areas following the recent incident where a restaurant owner set a three-storey garment shop on fire. He emphasised that the authorities should address this matter urgently and implement safety measures in the market area to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

“In light of the recent incident, I have become concerned about the safety of my footwear shop. In the pastPreviously, the state administration had installed CCTVs in the market, but many of them were removed due to smart city development initiatives. This has caused anxiety among all the shopkeepers in Paltan bazaar, prompting us to urge the administration to reinstate these safety measures by installing CCTVs in the market areas,” said another shopkeeper Vinod Chawla.

Masson told this correspondent that the incident has had a significant impact on everyone in the market. The government’s efforts to enhance the market areas as part of the smart city project involved changes to roads, banners and other infrastructure. However, the installation of CCTVs in the market and surrounding areas, which is also part of the project, remains incomplete. In response to the recent incident, they have decided to meet with the District Magistrate on April 28 to request the establishment of CCTV cameras in the market area. Additionally, they believed that the police should increase patrolling in major market areas, particularly during nighttime, he said.
