Surkanda Devi ropeway operation suspended pending technical probe

At least 36 persons including Tehri MLA Kishore Upadhyaya were stuck in a ropeway trolley for about 40 minutes when it stopped midway at Surkanda Devi here on Sunday. The passengers in the trolley were stuck for about 40 minutes after the trolley suddenly stopped midway. However, no person was injured in the incident. Taking serious cognisance of the incident the Dhanaulti sub divisional magistrate Lakshmiraj Chauhan has ordered suspension of the ropeway operation pending a technical inquiry.

A trolley of the ropeway at Surkanda Devi stopped midway on Sunday evening due to a technical snag. There were a total of 36 persons including the Tehri MLA Kishore Upadhyay on board the trolley. The passengers spent about 40 anxious minutes in the stalled trolley. The authorities finally managed to restart the trolley after which the passengers were safely removed from it.

The Tehri MLA said that the ropeway stopping function midway suddenly is a serious matter. Stating that the lives of people cannot be put at risk, he said that the authorities should ensure that such an incident is not repeated in the future.

Meanwhile, the SDM said that the trolley had stalled due to a technical snag. The operation of the ropeway has been stopped temporarily and will be restarted after a technical inquiry, he added.
