The abutment of a bridge across the Girthi Ganga on the road leading to the Indo-China border region about eight kilometres from Malari in the Chamoli district was reported to be damaged on Sunday. This bridge is not used by the general public but is used by the armed forces and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
The level of water in the Girthi Ganga rose swiftly at about 8 AM on Sunday following consistent heavy rain in the region. This resulted in the water also flowing across the edges of the bridge on the Malari-Sumna road leading to the border region. This has resulted in damage to the abutment and to the approach road.
