Former cabinet minister leaves Congress for BJP

The Congress suffered yet another blow with its senior leader and former cabinet minister Dinesh Aggarwal joining the Bharatiya Janata Party along with his supporters on Sunday. At the same time, the Congress expelled Aggarwal and former councillor Rajesh Parmar for a period of six years for anti-party activities. Aggarwal and his supporters were welcomed into the BJP at the party’s State office by the BJP State president Mahendra Bhatt, sitting Haridwar MLA and former CM Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nisihank’, BJP Haridwar candidate Trivendra Singh Rawat, Dharmpur MLA Vinod Chamoli and cabinet ministers Subodh Uniyal, Ganesh Joshi and Prem Chand Agarwal.

Speaking after joining the BJP, the three-time MLA and two-time cabinet minister said that he had started his political life by joining the Congress party in 1968. “However, today there is a lack of leadership in the Congress. It has now become impossible for any thinking person connected to the public to remain in the Congress anymore. Wherever I go, I get to hear that there is no political leader in this time period like Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I and my friends who have joined the BJP have come here after being impressed by the works of PM Modi and chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami,” he said. Aggarwal further said that by joining the BJP he considers himself fortunate for getting the chance to cooperate with those taking the nation forward.

Speaking on the occasion, the BJP State president said that considering the atmosphere being witnessed and the feedback the party is receiving, it will be difficult for the Congress candidates to prevent forfeiture of their deposits in all the five Lok Sabha constituencies in the State. “Senior Congress leaders and workers joining the BJP one after another shows that Uttarakhand is going to be Congress-free. The good people who are still there in the Congress and other parties are welcome to join us till the day of polling,” Bhatt said. Assuring those who had joined the BJP of respect, he further said that leaders emerge from party workers in the BJP not by any right by birth. The BJP is the only party which does not compromise with its ideology and principles, he claimed. Bhatt also exhorted all those who had joined the party to work for ensuring a resounding victory of BJP candidates in the Lok Sabha elections.

It is pertinent to mention here that a number of prominent Congress leaders have joined the BJP in the recent past. Former cabinet minister and ex-Badrinath MLA Rajendra Bhandari, the former Garhwal candidate of the Congress and son of ex-CM Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri, Manish Khanduri, two former MLAs Vijaypal Sajwan and Malchand, former Congress candidate from Kaladhungi Assembly constituency and the party’s State general secretary Mahesh Sharma along with AAP’s State convenor Jot Singh Bisht have joined the BJP so far.
