The Laksar municipality has started cleaning drains ahead of the rainy season to minimise the risk of waterlogging in the city after the recent orders of the Haridwar district administration. The municipality had issued tenders for cleaning all 40 small and big drains in the city before the onset of the monsoon season, as per the officials.  They said that the drains are being cleaned manually and with the help of machines as per the requirement.

According to the officials, waterlogging is one of the prominent issues in Laksar every year and overflowing drains and flooded roads can be observed at various locations after the arrival of monsoon. To minimise the risk of waterlogging this rainy season, the municipality started the work of cleaning up the drains- about a month before the arrival of the monsoon- which will be finished soon, as per the officials. They said that ponds like Ambedkar Murti pond, the pond in the main market and other water bodies play an important role during the rainy season in minimising waterlogging issues in the town considering which, these will be cleaned thoroughly and the whole drain cleaning work is expected to be completed in the next 10 days.

The executive officer of Laksar muicipality Shekhar Sharma informed that the formation of new residential colonies in the town along with a lack of a scientifically planned drainage system often causes waterlogging issues during rain. Considering the issue, the district magistrate directed the irrigation department to prepare a drainage plan to tackle the issue to present it to the state administration for approval.
