After a long spell of dillydallying and studied silence over who would contest the two high-voltage seats in Uttar Pradesh-Rae Barely and Amethi – once considered pocket boroughs of the Gandhi family-Congress seems set to announce the names of Priyanka Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi respectively for these two seats. With the national gaze remaining trained on these two seats, given their special status, the party bigwigs have been reportedly brainstorming on who to field. They were once almost certain that the saffron party was all set to sweep UP’s electoral battle with at least 70 seats in its kitty. However, they are now of the view that electoral scene has changed dramatically in their favour and the two Gandhi family scions would win these seats comfortably in the changed poll scenario.
The Congress activists said that the huge flex boards being put up by the party in these two constituencies bearing pictures of the siblings have dispelled the uncertainty and galvanised them. They are now looking determined to give the saffron candidates a good run for their money in these Gandhi family bastions.
