Attempting to usher in an era of automation in the age-old system of distribution of ration through the Public Distribution System (PDS), the Uttarakhand government has decided to install grain ATMs for dispensing ration. Initially the scheme would be implemented as a pilot project in two districts of the state. Informing about the plan of her department the Food and Civil Supplies minister Rekha Arya said that the State government would implement the scheme under World Food Scheme. She said that any person can get the ration from the machine just like one takes out cash from the ATM.  Arya said that the machines would help in door-step delivery of ration and would make the process of distribution of ration hassle free. The minister further informed that initially the grain ATMs would be installed in two districts, one located in the plains and another in the mountainous area. The ATMs are expected to be installed by the end of this month.  Incidentally, Uttarakhand would be the third state after Odisha and Haryana where such ATMs would be installed.

One grain ATM can dispense 70 kilogrammes of food grain at a time. The ration card holder can get wheat, rice and pulses from the machine by mentioning their card number or Aadhar number.
