Snowfall in higher reaches brings chill in mountains

Even as many areas in the state are experiencing rainy weather, the high altitude mountains in the Badrinath and Joshimath regions in Chamoli district have already received snow.  The mountain peaks near Joshimath were blanketed by snow on Saturday morning. The residents of the town have been experiencing cold conditions as a result of the snowfall. The snowfall in the first fortnight of September has heralded cold conditions in Joshimath and other higher mountainous regions in the state even as rains continue in various parts.

Meanwhile, the state meteorological centre has issued a yellow warning (watch) regarding the possibility of heavy rain with intense spells at isolated places in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts on Sunday. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also likely to occur at isolated places in the mountainous regions of Uttarakhand while light to moderate rain/thundershowers are likely to occur at most places in districts of the state.

The provisional state capital Dehradun is forecast to experience a generally cloudy sky. Few spells of light to moderate rain/thundershowers are likely to occur while one or two spells may be intense in some areas. The maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be about 30 degrees Celsius and 23 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun on Sunday.

The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in different parts of the state on Saturday were 28. 6 degrees Celsius and 23.7 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun, 34.5 degrees Celsius and 25.4 degrees Celsius in Pantnagar, 22 degrees Celsius and 14.2 degrees Celsius in Mukteshwar and 22 degrees Celsius and 16.8 degrees Celsius respectively in New Tehri.
