The effects of snowfall exacerbating the difficulty of the terrain may pose challenges to candidates and the election machinery in four assembly constituencies in Pithoragarh district. The recent spell of snowfall has not only intensified the cold but also affected connectivity in the border regions of the district. In this scenario, the candidates will face challenges in reaching the voters in the near future.

There are four assembly constituencies in Pithoragarh district- Pithoragarh, Didihat, Dharchula and Gangolihat. Out of these, most of the areas of Dharchula assembly constituency are remote and hard to access. While scores of villages are remote, hundreds of villages and outer settlements are off the roads. Many villages do not even have mobile phone connectivity. People have to walk 20 to 25 kilometres to reach these villages. In Didihat assembly constituency also one has to walk eight to 10 kilometres to reach Kanadhar and Mitara villages among others. There are similar villages in Gangolihat constituencies too.

In Pithoragarh assembly constituency, there are many villages including Haldu and Bhaura which are not connected by road. In such a situation, the candidates will have to literally sweat it out even in the cold weather to reach every voter physically.

Observers point out that politicians will play on the development factor, with those of the ruling party and those in opposition making their own claims about development.
