In an excellent example of brotherhood and communal harmony, the Jamiat Ulema e- Hind, Uttarakhand has appealed to the Imams of the mosques and administrators of Madarsas to hold special prayers for the people of Joshimath facing threat due to land subsidence. The Jamait which is one of the leading organisations of scholars of Islam belonging to Deoband School has said that it is with the people of Joshimath in this hour of crisis. The appeal of the organisation assumes significance since Joshimath city is of paramount importance for Hinduism and it is the seat of Adi Guru Shankaracharya. The place is also the winter abode of Lord Badrinath. The State general secretary of the Jamiat Ulema e Hind, Maulana Sharafat Kasmi has written letters to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the chief minister of Uttarakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami. In the letter he said that Joshimath, which is the city of historical importance, is in danger. “Joshimath is not only a city but it holds a complete tradition in itself. It is said that the Adi Guru Shankaracharya did Tapasya here and he gave it a religious identity in the eight century,’’ he wrote in the letter. Kasmi said that it is important to delve into the roots of the problem and find ways to save the city. He said that the government should work fast now. Kasmi said that 603 houses and commercial properties in Joshimath are facing danger as they have developed cracks and Jamiat e Ulema Hind is worried about the safety of the residents.

The spokesperson of the Jamait, Mohammad Shahnazar said that the organisation wants that both the union and state governments should come forward to provide relief to the affected families. He said that the government should announce a special package to relocate the affected families to safer places.

Following the appeal made by the Jamait, a special prayer for affected families of Joshimath was organised at Madarsa Dar e Akram, Azad colony in Dehradun on Tuesday.
