Breast cancer taking U’khand in its grip – AIIMS Rishikesh

The experts at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh have warned about increasing instances of cases of breast cancer in Uttarakhand. They point out that in the OPD of AIIMS Rishikesh; there has been an increase of more than 30 per cent in the number of breast cancer patients in the last three years. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer accounts for more than 21 per cent of all cancer deaths among women in India. The data of the AIIMS Rishikesh show that in the year 2019, a total of 1,233 patients with breast cancer were registered in the OPD of its Integrated Breast Care Centre (IBCC). In the year 2020, this number increased to 1,600 and till the first week of September this year more than 2,000 patients have been registered in the centre.

The Director AIIMS- Rishikesh Ravikant said that women are often not aware of this disease and one in every eight women on an average suffers from this disease. 

The Assistant Professor, IBCC Dr Prateek Sharda said, “ A new Vacuum-Assisted Breast Biopsy machine has been installed in the IBCC. This machine is especially beneficial in removing the lump in the breast. With this machine with modern technology, there is no need to take the patient to the operation theatre,’’ he said.
