Congress indecisive on Leader of Opposition

CLP leaves the choice on the high command. Name of LoP can be announced on Monday late night

The Congress party is expected to enter into the first session of the fifth Vidhan Sabha starting from Tuesday without its leader in the house. The meeting of the Congress legislature party which met on Monday evening at Rajiv Bhawan failed to take a decision on the issue of Leader of Opposition (LoP). It was decided to leave the issue to the party high command. The party sources indicate that the high command could take a decision on LoP on late night of Monday or Tuesday morning.

The meeting of the CLP was also attended by the in charge of the Uttarakhand unit of Congress Devendra Yadav. The six times MLA from Chakrata assembly Pritam Singh is said to be the front runner for the post of LoP. He was made the LoP in the last assembly after the death of Indira Hridayesh. Apart from him former cabinet minister and former speaker Yashpal Arya is also in contention for LoP. The three times MLA from Dharchula Harish Dhami too has thrown his hat in the ring for LoP.

Talking to the media persons ahead of the meeting of CLP, Pritam Singh said that he is not in any race for LoP. He however added that the national leadership and the MLAs of the party would decide on the issue. Singh said that the Congress party would raise its voice firmly in the Vidhan Sabha. Taking a dig at the government, Singh said that in the first meeting of the cabinet no issue from the Sankalp Patra (manifesto) of the BJP was discussed.
