Sheeshambada locals continue protest against MCD

Wednesday, 24 August 2022 | PNS | Dehradun

Tonnes of garbage remained unprocessed in the city as the locals continued to stage a protest outside the solid waste management and recycling plant in Sheeshambada on Tuesday and did not let vehicles carrying garbage of the city enter the plant. According to the locals, the officials of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) had promised to search for land to transfer the waste management plant but no concrete step has been taken by them so far. They said that the amount of the garbage arriving and mounting in the plant is consistently increasing and the polluted water released through the plant is affecting their crops, health and the stench lingering in the area has become unbearable. The chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna said that the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is working on searching the land but it will take time and they have tried to convey the same to the locals. He said, “We have tried talking to the locals about the issue but they did not allow any garbage carrying vehicle to enter the plant premises. The garbage is presently disposed of at garbage transfer stations but they also have limited space as they are not meant to store garbage for more than a few hours. We are taking necessary steps on the matter. We are in talks with locals and believe that they will understand the situation and allow the garbage to be disposed of in the plant on Wednesday.”
