Elephant calf injured in tiger attack dies during treatment

An elephant calf injured in a tiger attack in the Dhela range of Corbett tiger reserve on December 10, succumbed to its injuries during treatment on Monday. In related news, a nine-month-old elephant calf injured after being hit by a train in the Tanda forest range of the Lalkuan-Bareilly stretch on December 13 is undergoing treatment. One elephant had died in the mishap.

According to elephants, the elephant calf injured in a tiger attack was brought to the Kalagarh range for treatment on December 11. The calf was estimated to be aged about three months. The pachyderm had serious injuries on its left forelimb, right hind leg and one of its hind legs was also fractured. Officials informed that the condition of the elephant calf deteriorated and it passed away in the wee hours of Monday. The post mortem of the calf was carried out as per the regulations and its viscera and samples of internal organs have been sent for examination to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Izatnagar in Bareilly.
