The police are on alert mode ahead of by the Assembly by-elections in Bageshwar for which voting is scheduled to be held on September 5. Over 1,000 police personnel are deployed across the district to ensure safety, law and order during the election, said the superintendent of police of Bageshwar Akshay Konde. He told The Pioneer that the police have identified 15 vulnerable booths in the district where authorities are paying extra attention to maintain law and order. Distribution of liquor, money and valuable items among voters before elections with the aim of wooing them to vote for a particular candidate is not a new malpractice and the police are conducting regular checking campaigns across the district to prevent such activities. He said that the police are acting against the smuggling of alcohol and illicit drugs among others. “The police have so far seized about 300 litres of liquor and three kilogrammes of charas this month. We also recently seized seven kilogrammes of silver during checking. All police station officers have been directed to stay vigilant in their respective areas against such violations,” said Konde. He said over 1,000 district police personnel are presently deployed to maintain law and order along with personnel from Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) ahead of the elections. The district will also receive additional police personnel from neighbouring districts to carry out necessary duties associated with security arrangements and others ahead of bypolls, added the SP.
