Considering the consistent decline in the water level of water resources like rivers, canals and ponds in the Nainital district, the district magistrate Vandana Singh on Thursday ordered a ban on the pre-approved construction works for which water connection was sought from the Jal Sansthan. She also directed the department to restrict new water connections to ensure sufficient water for public consumption. The DM also said that washing of vehicles at service centres will be banned with immediate effect and only dry wash will be allowed. The use of big pumps to carry large amounts of water will also remain prohibited. She directed Jal Sansthan to disconnect the water connection of establishments of those who fail to comply with the order and take strict action. Singh said that the use of drinking water will also be restricted for irrigation, washing and other similar purposes. The officials concerned must take strict action against incidents like water overflowing from tanks, dripping from the rooftop tanks and other water waste occurrences. The water connections of all the offenders must be disconnected who are found to be wasting water besides taking strict action against them, the DM said. She also ordered the officials concerned to work on stopping leakages in the main distribution pipelines to prevent water waste. If the administration finds any leakage in any drinking water pipeline, the officer concerned will be held responsible and action will be taken against them as per the rules. These are critical times and the district administration seeks the cooperation of the people and departments concerned to ensure the water crisis does not escalate across the district, she added.
