Three rescued from child labour in Doon

Sunday, 22 OCTOBER 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

Following the directions of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) rescued three children who were engaged in child labour in Dehradun. Talking to The Pioneer, BBA State coordinator Suresh Uniyal said that the SCPCR recently informed the district task force about child labour in the Tyagi Road area of Dehradun. BBA along with the district task force visited the area to rescue the children, he added.

He said that the children were 13-years-old and were working in motor mechanics’ shops. The children were taken to the child welfare committee. Out of the three children, one was reunited with his parents after counselling. Uniyal emphasised that parents play a major role in pushing their children towards child labour. The district task force should conduct a weekly drive to check child labour. Uniyal further added that it is the responsibility of the SCPCR to conduct inspections in areas where the chances of child labour are most.

SCPCR member Vinod Kaparwan told this correspondent, “A local citizen had informed the commission about child labour in the Tyagi Road area. Prompt action was taken by directing the district task force to address the matter. The incidence of child labour in the city is rising, primarily due to the lack of access to education. It has been observed that industrial areas and slums are particularly susceptible to child labour. Taking these factors into consideration, the commission is planning to conduct an inspection of the industrial area in Doon to address the issue.”

It is important to raise awareness among parents about the ill-effects of child labour, he added.
