Ganga swells up to danger level, subsides later in the day

The water level in the Ganga rose to the danger level following heavy rains in the surrounding hills since Friday night. The level of water in the Ganga during the daytime on Saturday was 294 metres, one metre above the danger mark of 293 metres. The level remains high durig the daytime, considering which the authorities alerted residents in villages on the banks of the river.

Due to increase in level of water in Ganga, some problems were faced in the Laksar area due to which the authorities called the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel. The administration declared an alert in about 30 villages on the banks of the Ganga andSolani rivers. Flood posts at Bhikkampur, Balavali, Govardhanpur and Balavali in Laksar were put on alert.  After this, the administration took possession of the buildings of government schools of Bhikkampur, Govardhanpur, Raisi, Khanpur and Balawali to accommodate people from vulnerable villages in case of disaster.  In view of the danger, the police along with the administration are going to the villages and instructing the people to stay away from the rivers for the next 48 hours. The authorities reported a drop in the water level later during the day. Laksar sub divisional magistrate Gopalram Binwal said that the water of Ganga has come below the danger mark.  Despite this, preparations have been made for relief and rescue operations. He told that in case of the emergency, a contingent of SDRF has also been called to Laksar.

Uttar Pradesh Irrigation department junior engineer Sandeep Jain said that the water level of the Ganga had increased due to heavy rains on the mountains since Friday evening and remained high till Saturday noon, after which the level decreased.
