AIIMS doctors ask people to continue following the Covid appropriate behaviour

Amid the concern created by the Delta plus variant of the Covid-19 and possibility of a third wave of pandemic hitting India, the experts at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh here have warned that the third wave could be more dangerous if the Covid appropriate behaviour is continued to be neglected by the general public. However the institute has clarified that none of the 15 samples sent by it to the ICMR lab Delhi has been found to be of Delta plus variant.

The Director of AIIMS Rishikesh Dr Ravikant said that in the delta plus variant the infection in the lungs spreads very fast. “There is also a possibility that the ‘antibody cocktail’ treatment may not be 100 percent effective in the Delta Plus variant. We cannot say that the Delta plus variant would cause the third wave,’’ he said.

The Assistant Professor, microbiology, Dr Deepjyoti Kalita, said that Corona virus has RNA and it changes its form from time to time. Dr Kalita said, “Delta plus and other variants are not much different when it comes to disease Pathogenesis but the delta plus has more affinity for the mucosal cells of lung compared to other known variants.’’

The Nodal Officer of Covid, Dr R K Panda said if a vaccinated person is showing symptoms of covid-19,then the chances are that he or she made it by suffering from delta plus variant.  “So far it has also been seen that the vaccine has not been more effective in the patient of Delta Plus variant. Despite the low rate of Covid-19 infection these days there should not be any negligence in following the Covid-19 protocol,’’ he said.

Dr Panda opined that no person should be allowed to attend mass gatherings without vaccination and stressed the need to speed up the vaccination campaign.
