MCD imposes penalty of Rs one lakh each on 9 housing societies

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has imposed a penalty of Rs one lakh each on nine housing societies for not dispositing their bulk waste through door to door garbage collection vehicles. They have reportedly refused to dispose of their waste through MCD’s vehicles as they prefer private rickshaws for waste disposal.

The chief municipal health officer of Dehradun Dr Avinash Khanna said that Econ Waste Management Solutions, one of agencies that manages door to door garbage collection vehicles in the city, informed him on Monday that administrations of nine housing societies refused to dispose of their bulk waste despite their repeated attempts. He said that when a team was sent there to inquire about the matter, they said that they dispose of their garbage through private rickshaws and refused to dispose of it through MCD.

Following this, he said that the corporation imposed a fine of Rs one lakh each on nine housing societies. Out of these nine buildings, two buildings each are located in Subhash Road and New Road areas, four in Inder Road, Teg Bahadur Road, Mohini Road and Lakshmi Road areas of Dalanwala and one building in Race Course. It is being suspected by the officials that the building operators want to dispose of their bulk waste through private rickshaws due to reportedly low charges they can pay to the rickshaw operators. However, they said that the waste disposal through such means does not ensure whether the garbage is being disposed of as per the protocols of the Solid Waste Management rules. Khanna said that the corporation will take legal action if the buildings concerned fail to comply by rules.
