Son of Haldwani riot’s mastermind arrested

The Nainital police on Thursday arrested the wanted accused in the Haldwani riot case Abdul Moed from Delhi. Moed is the son of Abdul Malik who is accused of instigating the Haldwani riot on February 8. The police have so far arrested 84 accused for their alleged connection with the violence. The Nainital senior superintendent of police Prahlad Narayan Meena informed the media here on Thursday that six police teams were formed to arrest the wanted accused. They raided all possible hideouts in Delhi, Gujarat, Bihar, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, among other places. One of the teams finally arrested Moed in Delhi on Thursday. Meena said that the police have arrested 84 accused in the case most of whom were nabbed after raiding the houses located near the incident site. The police raided their houses on the basis of CCTV footage and other evidence found against them. The police also found several illegal weapons and cartridges besides the fuel that was allegedly used for arson during the violence. It will be recalled that the riot broke out after the authorities demolished a madarsa and namaz site constructed illegally on government land. The land was encroached upon by Malik and the police claim he is the primary accused in the case. After hiding in several States to evade arrest, he was finally nabbed by the police on February 24. The police have claimed that he along with his son allegedly incited others to violence that killed at least seven persons, injured over 100 people and damaged properties worth over Rs two crore. The sessions court granted the police a 10- day police custody remand (PCR) of Malik until March 2. The police are interrogating the accused and will proceed further in the case accordingly, the SSP said.
