World Health Day is celebrated annually on April 7 to commemorate the anniversary of the founding of World Health Organization (WHO). This year’s theme for the occasion is ‘Our Planet, Our Health’. The purpose of celebrating this occasion is to analyse all aspects affecting human health and to work towards a better future. Many people consume varied diets and also exercise frequently though it is also vital to breathe clean air along with this. There are two major components in nature- biotic (living things) and abiotic (non-living things). The varied minerals obtained through natural process benefit our health. People may think they are consuming a healthful item by drinking milk but are they indirectly consuming pollutants which reach the farmlands from industries? According to a WHO report, 13 people die every minute in the world due to lung, heart disease and strokes which can be traced to air pollution. About 3.6 billion live without toilet globally while 8,29,000 people die every year from diarrhoeal disease caused by contaminated water and poor sanitation. Tobacco kills more than eight million people every year. Unhealthy lifestyle, diet and the air affected by chemical contaminants and such factors are diluting the effects of efforts of people to achieve good health. Experts point out that the environment is not only the biggest gift to humans but also the main factor affecting the health of people.

Speaking on the impact of the environment on human health, environmentalist and member of Sanjivani Research Mission, Dr Vinod Upadhyay, who is also the former principal of Himalaya Medical College, Doiwala states that the environment is the most precious gift of nature to mankind. “It is our duty to keep it pure and ensure the survival of flora and fauna also for the welfare of humans. Our ancestors provided us with various means to keep the environment healthy. Humans have the hunger to be superior among all on the planet and there are many methods to fulfill this desire.  On other hand, many disasters have been invited in this race for superiority. The worst effect is the irreparable loss to human life from airborne chemicals and different types of radiation related disease which have resulted in varied cancers, strokes and other serious ailments. If necessary measures are not taken immediately, we would lose the most precious treasure gifted to us by god which is health. May good sense prevail and we fulfill our duty towards the coming generation,” he said.
