Governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh has directed the Horticulture department to place bee boxes in the Valley of Flowers. He also directed that ex-servicemen be trained in apiculture. Stating that apiculture should be encouraged in mountainous districts, especially in border regions, he said that women self help groups should also be trained in it. He said that there is immense potential for apiculture in Valley of Flowers, adding that all people of Uttarakhand should benefit from this blessing of nature. The governor expressed these views on Wednesday when honey was extracted from bee boxes kept in the Raj Bhawan. About 40 kilogrammes of honey was extracted from five bee boxes this year. The honey extracted in Raj Bhawan is gifted to special dignitaries on behalf of Uttarakhand by the governor every year. Singh also directed that the number of bee boxes should be increased next year and that a workshop should be organised at Raj Bhawan once a year for apiculturists.
