Authorities shifted about 60 people trapped in their houses after heavy rainfall caused waterlogging in Udham Singh Nagar’s Kashipur town in the wee hours of Wednesday. The officials said that tehsildar Kashipur called the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) in the wee hours stating that several residents living in the Himmatpur area of Kashipur were trapped in their houses due to severe waterlogging. The teams of SDRF immediately left for the spot with rafts and other rescue equipment to conduct relief and rescue operations in the affected area. The officials said that the team started relief and rescue work on the spot in the dark in the wee hours and rescued about 60 people trapped in their submerged houses with the help of rafts and brought them to a safe place under extremely adverse conditions. They said that the district administration provided accommodations to the rescued people at a nearby local primary school. Amid a red alert for heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand, district magistrates have been urged to take precautions in their respective districts. River drains were in spate in many districts due to heavy rains for the past few days. The under secretary Satendra Burman also issued orders for the district magistrates of Pithoragarh and Udham Singh Nagar to take preventive measures against the Gaura Ganga river of Munsiyari and Jaspur’s Phika Barrage respectively. He has also asked them to carry out real time monitoring of all vulnerable rivers and drains that can disrupt the lives of locals. The administration must take preventive measures to minimise or prevent waterlogging in vulnerable areas of their respective districts, as per the order. As per the State Meteorological Centre, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur in five districts- Pauri, Champawat, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar on Thursday. The meteorological centre has also issued a red alert for Dehradun and Tehri districts.
