Miffed at Rahul Gandhi insulting the OBC community, a number of State office bearers of the OBC community from the Congress and other parties from Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Dehradun and Haridwar districts joined the Bharatiya Janata Party here on Saturday. Speaking on the occasion, the BJP State president Mahendra Bhatt said that members of the OBC and other communities are likely to become disenchanted with the Congress in the coming days considering the manner in which Rahul Gandhi’s arrogance is unaffected despite the sentence handed out to him by the court for insulting the OBC community.

Bhatt inducted a number of political workers of the OBC community from Rawain-Badkot in Uttarkashi, Roorkee, Vikasnagar and others from Haridwar, Chamoli and Dehradun into the BJP on the occasion. Bhatt claimed that the trend of those joining the BJP is continuing in the State because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance and chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s leadership. With the court convicting Rahul Gandhi for defaming the OBC community and the Congress raising ruckus instead of him apologising for his error, a large number of OBC community members are miffed at the Congress and are joining the BJP. The Congress State general secretary, its OBC cell State secretary and other OBC office bearers left their party and joined the BJP on Saturday.

The Congress State general secretary and former municipal council chairman of Badkot in Uttarkashi district, Atol Singh Rawat joined the BJP along with his supporters. He said that the nation had achieved new heights in development after 2014 under PM Modi’s leadership and the State had achieved the same after 2017 under the BJP State government. He said that many in the Congress were interested in the BJP for some time but the recent developments which saw the senior Congress leaders defending Rahul despite him insulting the OBC community nullified all possibility of such members remaining in the Congress any longer.

Chamoli district Panchayat vice chairman Lakshman Singh said that the capable persons have always been denigrated in the Congress. He recalled that he was denied the ticket to contest as a warden in the local body elections but he contested as an independent candidate and won the election.
