The Dehradun district magistrate R Rajesh Kumar has directed the city magistrate to conduct a detailed investigation and submit a report on allegations of illegal meat shops being run without license and NOC in the district. The DM issued this direction recently on being submitted a detailed complaint by Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) members Niharika Kapoor and Rubina Nitin Iyer who had discussed about illegal meat shops running without license from Food Safety and NOC from the municipal authorities. They informed the DM that 542 meat shops are licensed by municipal authorities in Dehradun, Doiwala/Rishikesh and Vikasnagar while the actual number of such shops is considerably higher.  They stated that most of the meat shops across Dehradun are running without proper license. Meat shops are allowed only to sell meat of an animal but live animals are illegally killed without stunning and medical examination which is a mandatory practice followed in registered slaughter house. Meat shops owners are seen operating the shop without following any health or sanitation protocols which become breeding grounds for various diseases and viruses. The SPCA member has also submitted complaints to the police and food safety district officer regarding illegal pactice of keeping and killing live animals in unlicensed meat shops and those operating very close to religious places.
