Acting on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s pre-election promise the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has set the ball rolling for implementation of  the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand. The newly sworn-in cabinet of Uttarakhand held its first meeting on Thursday and decided to constitute a committee which will prepare a draft for implementing the Uniform Civil Code in the state. The cabinet discussed no other agenda on the day. Interacting with the media persons after the cabinet meeting, Dhami said that on February 12 ahead of the polling in Assembly elections this year he had said that the BJP government would bring a Uniform Civil Code in the State. He said that the cabinet in its first meeting has decided that a committee of legal experts and all stakeholders would be constituted. Dhami said that a draft of the committee would be implemented in the state. He said that Uttarakhand would become the first state after Goa in the country to implement the Uniform Civil Code. “Uttarakhand has a golden history and is full of people with armed forces background. The state also has two international boundaries and in such conditions it has become necessary that it should have a law wherein everyone is equal. The constitution clearly mentions that the states can implement it and the Supreme Court (SC) has also asked the governments to have it,’’ he said. Dhami said that Uttarakhand is Dev Bhoomi and other states should follow the example set by it on the Uniform Civil Code.
