Congress puts brakes on development, poisoning U’khand with appeasement- Modi

The people of Uttarakhand should consider the past and future while casting their vote in the Assembly elections. They should not give another chance to the Congress as that party has proved with its past performance that it will apply the brakes on the developmental works being undertaken by the double-engine government of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said this while virtually addressing voters as part of Vijay Sankalp Sabha in Haridwar on Monday. Modi compared the works done during the term of the UPA government and Congress state government with the works done by the BJP government. He also accused the Congress of mixing the “poison of appeasement” in Uttarakhand.

Speaking on the occasion, PM Modi said that work on the Rishikesh-Karnprayag rail project was to be started a decade ago but the then governments stalled the work. During the term of the UPA at the centre when the Congress was also in power in Uttarakhand, only about Rs four crore was spent on the Rishikesh-Karnprayag rail project. “We used to push from Delhi but brakes used to be applied on such developments from Dehradun. After you gave us the chance to serve you, the double-engine government spent Rs 5,500 crore on the project in five years.” Citing another example, Modi said that work on the Dehradun-Delhi highway which was approved by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 2000 was also delayed on the grounds of clearances not being given by Uttar Pradesh. The Congress was in power at the centre and its allies were governing UP at that time. This project too was expedited by the double-engine government, he said.

Modi spoke of the roads with all-weather connectivity being developed in Uttarakhand, the free LPG connections provided under Ujjwala Yojana and also the State government’s Ghasyari Yojana to provide cattle fodder. Accusing the Congress of playing appeasement politics, he said, “In this sacred Devbhumi, the Congress is trying to mix the poison of appeasement. Congress leaders are playing appeasement politics in the name of a university which is enough to open the eyes of the people of Uttarakhand. In the past too, during the term of their government they had played various games to distort the culture and identity of Uttarakhand which the people of Haridwar know very well.” With its immense natural resources, Uttarakhand was treated like an ATM by the Congress to fill the coffers of its leaders. The people of Uttarakhand understand that this election is between those who fulfilled the dream of creation of Uttarakhand and those who tried to stall this. Modi said that those who had ignored the mountains for decades are now trying to woo the voters with new slogans. Had they focused on the Char Dham, it would have paved the way for tourism and progress instead of leading to situations which forced the people to migrate from the mountains, he said.

Modi further said that Yogi Adityanath is coming back to power in Uttar Pradesh. “When Yogi comes, the criminals run away. Had there been a Congress government in Uttarakhand, such criminals would have been allowed to settle here and would have been pampered as vote banks. This state is protected so far and the people should beware- do not give the Congress another chance,” said PM Modi.
