Transport Dept ordered to take strict action in cases of overloading

Expressing grief at the loss of life and injuries caused by the road accident in Chakrata on Sunday, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. He also announced ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 each for the dependents of the deceased and Rs 25,000 each for those seriously injured in the accident.

Soon after news of the accident was received, the chief minister directed the Dehradun district administration officials to conduct rescue and relief efforts swiftly while ensuring immediate medical treatment for the injured persons.

He said that the state government will provide all possible assistance for the treatment of the injured persons and family members of the deceased. Cabinet minister Ganesh Joshi, Garhwal commissioner and the Dehradun district magistrate also left for the scene of the accident. Further, the chief minister also directed the Dehradun district magistrate to conduct a magisterial inquiry of the accident. Dhami also issued strict instructions to the Transport department to ensure that there is no overloading in vehicles. Strict action should be taken against the person responsible in case any such instance of overloading is observed, he said. In order to prevent such a mishap in the future, the chief minister also appealed to the people of the state to avoid overloading. The people too have to become aware and put an effective stop to such accidents, he added.
