The president of association of self financed institutes of Uttarakhand, Sunil Agarwal has said that the experiment of admission through the Central University Entrance Test (CUET) has failed in Uttarakhand. He said that this year admissions were made on the basis of CUET score in the HNB Garhwal University and its affiliate colleges. Agarwal said that till last year a large number of the students (five to six times the number of available seats) used to apply for the colleges such as DAV PG College, DBS college, MKP college and SGRR college in Dehradun which receive grant from the government. However this year more than 60 per cent of seats in these colleges are still vacant. Agarwal said that since these colleges receive government grants they charge nominal fees. He said that the situation is even worse in the private colleges where admissions have taken place in less than 10 per cent of the available seats.

Agarwal said that the association had written letters to the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Garhwal University and requested them to exempt the colleges from the CUET but no positive response came from them.

“There is an option of getting admission in the Sri Dev Suman Uttarakhand University for the students who could not appear in the CUET examinations which will end on August 14 and in such a situation the private colleges will be the only option for the students,’’ he said.

Agarwal said that the authorities should have made the students aware by undertaking an extensive campaign before making the CUET mandatory for the admissions. He added that in view of the tough geographical conditions of the State the students should have been given permission to take direct admission.

Agarwal said that the association has again sent letters to the UGC and Union Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan and requested that the compulsion of the CUET should be removed in the interest of the students.
