Following the recent incidents of brutality against two women in the Dehradun district, the chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) Kusum Kandwal on Tuesday directed the senior superintendent of police, Ajai Singh to take strict action against the culprits involved in the crimes. She said that a man Deepak Sharma (29) allegedly killed his wife Pratibha (24) for dowry. They got married in February this year. The victim’s family have claimed that Pratibha’s husband and her in-laws used to torture her physically and mentally for dowry. She said that women being tortured and killed for dowry by in-laws is unfortunate, especially in the present times. She directed the SSP to finish the investigation to take strict action in the case of dowry death. In another case, a husband allegedly hit his wife with a frying pan and seriously injured her because he wanted a son. Kandwal asked the SSP about the progress in both cases and directed him to take action against the culprits within a week.  Responding to the commission’s questions, Kandwal said that Singh informed her that the police had registered a case against the husband and the victim’s in-laws in the first case. The husband was sent to jail on Monday and the police are investigating the claims of the deceased’s father against the in-laws. Besides this, the SSP said that the victim and the accused are currently admitted to the hospital for treatment in the second case. Police will question both and take further action once their health is stable, he added. Kandwal said that the Dehradun district has witnessed several cases of brutality against women in the past few days. The police must ensure that the women, who are victims of the crimes, and their families get all the support they need from the authorities concerned. The police should also speed up their investigation to ensure all the culprits get strict punishments as soon as possible, she added.
