Chief Secretary SS Sandhu on Thursday ordered the authorities to prepare an area specific plan to tackle traffic-related issues across the State. He said that the concerned authorities need to work on increasing public faith in public transport besides ensuring compliance with traffic rules to reduce traffic congestion.

Sandhu stated this in the meeting of the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) in which improvement in public transport and management of traffic were the main topics. He asked the officials to focus on preparing area specific plans for effective traffic management rather than implementation of a uniform plan everywhere. He asked them to ensure maximum utilisation of technology in traffic management plans. He said that non-compliance with traffic rules is also one of the reasons for traffic congestion and steps should be taken to ensure all follow the rules.

He said that a module should be prepared for online driving to educate children besides educating the general public about ways to reduce traffic congestion. He said that the authorities should also work on educating the new generation regarding traffic rules to ensure they follow rules. He also directed the authorities to increase the number of challans on drivers who park vehicles in no parking zones by increasing the use of drone cameras. CS said that UMTA will hold fortnightly meetings to oversee the continuous monitoring system towards reducing the traffic congestion by authorities concerned.
