Instead of participating in the Igas celebration planned in the chief minister’s residence here on Thursday evening, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami was in Uttarkashi to monitor the rescue operation underway to rescue the 41 trapped workers who have been stuck in the Silkyara tunnel since November 12.

The elaborate celebrations planned at the CM residence by the Culture department on the occasion of Igas were cancelled and the festival was marked in a simple manner with prayers for the safe rescue of the trapped workers. The CM has been in Uttarkashi for about two days now, monitoring the rescue mission, officials said. The Culture department had earlier planned the Igas celebration at the CM residence but Dhami cancelled his programme and went to Uttarkashi instead. However, as many had been informed earlier about the celebration, a number of people from distant and remote areas who reached here prayed to Lord Badrinath for the safe return of the stranded workers.

Uttarakhand Culture, Literature and Arts council vice chairperson Madhu Bhatt said that all cultural programmes on Igas were cancelled in view of the rescue operation underway at Silkyara. Residents of remote and distant areas who did not get timely information about the programme being cancelled at the CM residence arrived here but marked the occasion in a simple manner and prayed for the successful rescue of the workers.
