Emphatic victory of the Congress party in the Assembly elections in Karnataka recently has given an impetus to the efforts of unity of opposition parties against BJP. The effects of this endeavour are also visible in Uttarakhand. On Monday the leaders of Congress, left parties, JD (S) and others launched a frontal attack on the BJP government of Uttarakhand in a joint Press conference held in Congress Bhawan.

The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara said that all the like minded secular parties have now become united against the anti people policies of the government. He said that an all party meeting was held on Sunday in which many important decisions were taken and it was decided that joint press conferences would be organised every month to raise important issues. The PCC president added that an action plan committee would be constituted in the State which would prepare the strategy. The speakers on the occasion claimed that the Dhami government is trying to hide its agenda of appeasement and polarisation in the name of anti encroachment drive which is making the poor homeless. An effort to provide communal colour to the campaign is being done by use of words such as Land Jihad and Mazar Jihad.

The state secretary of the Communist Party of India – ML, Indresh Maikhuri said that the people have a right on forests, rivers and river bed materials under the Forest dwellers law of 2006 but its provisions are being sidelined to make the people homeless which is an offence. The general secretary of the Uttarakhand Parivartan Party (UPP), Naresh Naudiyal said that the land mafia is ruling the roost and it is managing the State government. He said that the government which was talking about making a strong land law before the assembly election is now maintaining a stoic silence on the issue.

The Vice president of Uttarakhand Congress Surya Kant Dhasmana said that the government had made a promise to provide a house to every family residing in the cities till the year 2022 but nothing is being done to fulfil this. Instead of moving ahead on its promise the government is actually making people homeless, he said.

The member, national council, Communist Party of India (CPI), Samar Bhandari said that effort to create an environment of fear and hatred is being done in a peaceful State such as Uttarakhand. He claimed that in last one and half months, six different incidents have occurred in the State which were ignited by the BJP, RSS and their supporters to attack the social fabric. He said that the Supreme Court (SC) in its order dated October 21, 2022 had ordered the government that prompt action should be taken against the people trying to disturb communal harmony with their comments and speeches but the State government has remained a mute spectator on such elements.

The chief spokesperson of Uttarakhand Congress Garima Dasauni said that being the principal opposition party, Congress would connect with the opposition parties.
