Violence erupted in Roorkee Civil Lines area following the death of a youth in accident. The enraged villagers gheraoed the police station, alleging that the youth had been murdered. As police tried to control the mob, the villagers started stone pelting on the police personnel in which two inspectors and a constable were injured. The agitated villagers put a two-wheeler on flame. Seeing that things were spiralling out of control, the police team lobbed tear gas shells. But as this failed to control the situation, they resorted to lathi charge. Later, prohibitory order under section 144 of CrPC was clamped on a radius of ten kilometers.

The deceased has been identified as Pankaj (35), resident of Belra village. When he was returning home at night on his two-wheeler a tractor knocked him down. His relatives and neighbours, however, insisted that it was a case of murder. They said that an argument ensued between him and others on DJ playing loud music near his village and subsequently he was attacked.

As the situation remained volatile and tension was palpable in the area, PAC was deployed and additional police forces were requisitioned to maintain peace.
