Lack of facilities mars Ganga Canal near Kaliyar

Saturday, 04 June 2022 | Chetan Singh Pundir | Roorkee

Continued apathy of the authorities has resulted in littering along the Ganga Canal near the Piran Kaliyar Dargah near Roorkee. Piran Kaliyar is visited by multitudes from different faiths and many of them bathe in the canal near the shrine.

However, shopkeepers have encroached on the parking space made for visitors. Sanitation is not being maintained at this site. On the bathing ghats near the Dargah where men, women and children bathe, many can be seen washing their clothes with detergent while the site is also littered with used nappies, used sanitary napkins and other trash. Due to lack of proper toilet facility it is common for people to relieve themselves along the Ghat. The Northern Division Ganga Canal office in Roorkee is responsible for maintaining facilities on the Ghat. When asked about the situation, the NDGC executive engineer Nalin Vardhan said that a letter had been sent to Peyjal Nigam a year ago regarding facilities at the site.
